There’s one road, Franklin Road, which just goes all out on the decorations.  We’re not just talking lights, we’re talking lights and then some.  I think there’s a residents association or something and it’s pretty much expected of you if move to the street.  And it’s just grown and got bigger and there are street performers and choirs and balloon people.

The only slight snag is that being in the middle of our summer it doesn’t get dark until about 9pm so it’s a really late night for the kids if you want to see it in the dark.  Still, at least this year they put the Telecom tree in the park at the bottom of Franklin road so you could do that at the same time.

Beach Personalities

Our girls have very different personalities.  Emily is generally more considered and careful than Lucy.  Yet, somehow we’ve noticed a pattern start to emerge this summer whereby they almost swap personalities on the beach.

Lucy seems to drop into a very calm, almost meditative state on the beach and just takes herself off to a quiet little patch of sand and then sits or lays, running he fingers through the sand and generally slows right down to what is pretty much a glacial speed for her.

Emily on the other hand can’t wait to get into the water then doesn’t want to get out again.  She loves her body board and thinks it’s hilarious when she gets dumped by a big wave and rolled over.  Her confidence in the water is awe inspiring and the joy she gets from it justifies our decision to move over her by itself.

Yes another one.  It doesn’t seem that long since Auckland had it’s last Tornado.  This one was over in West Auckland and sadly caused at least three people to be killed.  From the pictures it looks like some very high, concrete panels used in warehouse construction have been blown over, which could have been the cause.

Up on the North Shore at Torbay, Josie saw normal weather with no sign of the heavy rain I was seeing in town.  By late afternoon it had all cleared through in town as well and I rode home under a sunny blue sky…
